Abstract

This study was conducted to determine the effect of pergonal on rabbit bucks administered at different doses on haematology, seminal characteristics and electrolyte indices. A twelve week fertility drug trial was conducted using twenty-four adult buck rabbits.  The animals were grouped into three of eight (8) rabbits, sub-divided into two (2) replicate of four (4) matured rabbit in a completely randomized design. A vial of pergonal was dissolved in 1 ml of saline and assigned to each group representing treatment 1 (1.0 ml), 2 (6.0 iµ) and 3 (12.0 iµ).  At the end of the study, haematology, seminal and electrolytes indices were determined. All the parameters in haematology were significantly (P<0.05) different with similar trend in their values.  Packed Cell Volume decreased at treatment three (3) when compared with control indicating less anaemic of the animal in that treatment.  The parameter of seminal characteristics showed significant (P<0.05) difference. Sperm concentration has the highest value at treatment 3 (84.25%) while Abnormal Sperm Proportion had similar values.  High sperm concentration is associated with improved quest for animal libido.  The electrolyte parameter indicated significant (P<0.05) difference. All the values increased as pergonal doses increased.  Potassium, phosphorus and chlorine had similar values indicating adequate mineral composition to bone formation of the animals.  By this study, 12.01µ pergonal dose prove its acceptability on haematology, seminal characteristics and electrolytes indices of rabbit buck.
