Abstract

The study was conducted during October 2005 – October 2006 to evaluate the paravets activities within their communities as veterinary services providers and as community extension workers. Data were collected via questionnaires included both paravets and samples from the communities. SPSS was used for data analysis and chi square test for the role of paravets. The results showed that 98.4% of the communities appreciated the paravets services. On the other hand, 83.6% of the paravets were satisfied with their job and the majority of them used social ceremonies in addition to personal contacts and meetings as extension methods. The study also indicated that paravet’s services enhanced recovery of sick animals and improved livestock performance in terms of reducing animal abortion and mortality, and also improved feeding practices. The role of paravets was clear as rural veterinary services providers and community extension workers as indicated by most of the communities. It was recommended to extend and expand the paravets training program to cover all the rural areas of North kordofan State.
