Effect of dietary supplement of false yam tuber extracts on performance, carcass characteristics, and haematological parameters of cockerels

Abstract


A six-week feeding trial was undertaken to evaluate the effect of false yam tuber (FYTE) extract on the growth performance, carcass and blood parameters of cockerels when included in their drinking water at various concentrations (3ml/littre of water and 5ml/littre of water). The extract was prepared by digging and chopping fresh false yam tuber into chips (~2cm3) and soaked in water (1 part of fresh tuber to 2 parts of water) for 3 days. The extract was obtained by sieving the content using a find mesh. The extract was the bottled in plastic bottles and stored at a temperature of -20C for use. One hundred and twenty cockerels at 8 weeks of age were used in a Completely Randomized Design. There were 4 (Ordinary water, Antibiotic containing water, 3ml FYTE per littre of water and 5ml FYTE per littre of water) treatments and each replicated three times with 10 birds in each replicate having a mean initial weight of 728g/bird. Data collected included growth, carcass and blood parameters and subjected to analysis of variance using GenStat (3rd edition). The treatments did not affect gain FCE. Birds on ordinary water significantly fed less feed than their counterparts. All carcass and organ characteristics did not differ significantly among the treatment groups. Haematological parameters did not vary significantly (P>0.05) among treatment groups. From this study, FYTE has the potential to replace antibiotics in poultry production.
