Abstract

Increased awareness of the problems associated with the use of feed antibiotics in chicken has stimulated research efforts for alternative ways, e.g. the use of probiotics. Enterococcus faecium AL41 is an environmental probiotic strain producing Enterocin-M. Its beneficial effect was checked in a model experiment with ISA Brown crossbred hens. Birds (20) fed diet HYD-04-a for a period of 6 weeks receiving water and feed ad libitum. Seven day old birds were divided into control and experimental group (n=10 in each, CG, EG). EG received E. faecium AL41 (200µl/animal/day, 109CFU/ml) for 3 weeks. The highest counts of AL41 were in faeces of EG at week 2 of AL41 strain application (21 day old hens; 2.49 ± 0.10 log10 CFU/g). Identity of AL41 strain was also confirmed using PCR. Birds were Salmonella absent. At week 1 of AL strain application, significant reduction of coliforms (p<0.001) was noted in faeces of EG compared to week 2 of AL41 strain application and to week 1 of  AL41 cessation. Enterobacteria were significantly reduced (p<0.001) at week 1 of AL41 application compared to week 3 of its cessation; in faeces of EG at week 2 compared to week 3 of cessation (p<0.01). Coagulase-positive staphylococci were significantly decreased in EG (p<0.001) at week 2 of application compared to weeks 2 and 3 of cessation. There was significantly higher phagocytic activity in EG compared to CG (p<0.001). GPx was not negatively influenced nor was the average daily weight gain. Further farm experiments will be arranged to confirm and extend our results.
